Finding greatness in the small

As passionate naturalists, we rely on our knowledge to protect nature and preserve biodiversity. Our purview extends from large-scale projects (habitat management, monitoring of renaturation initiatives etc.) to the study of the infinitesimal world of mosses (bryological surveys, moss research).

Sphagnum papillosum, new for Luxembourg

End of June 2024 a small population of Sphagnum papillosum was discovered in the Nature Reserve of Finsterthal. The green-orange heads of the plants were fairly visible on the crimson carpet formed by Sphagnum rubellum, another very rare species in Luxembourg. Microscopical examination confirmed this new species, thus completing the list of actually 18 Sphagnum taxa occurring in Luxembourg.
