Finding greatness in the small
As passionate naturalists, we rely on our knowledge to protect nature and preserve biodiversity. Our purview extends from large-scale projects (habitat management, monitoring of renaturation initiatives etc.) to the study of the infinitesimal world of mosses (bryological surveys, moss research).
The dull, rainy days of February provide the perfect opportunity to carry out some laboratory work, such as identifying the plant and bryophyte specimens collected during the 2025 projects. This allows for some wonderful discoveries to be made after the fieldwork, such as confirming the presence of Pseudobryum cinclidioides in a peaty willow forest in Wilwerdange-Conzefenn. This species is extremely rare in Luxembourg and the wider region (Wallonia, Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate). At the same site, the second occurrence of Sphagnum cuspidatum in Luxembourg was confirmed, bringing the total number of Sphagnum species at Conzefenn, a biodiversity hotspot, to 18.
